Project type

Street Fashion Photography

Date

August - October 2022

Pretoria & Tembisa

The idea of the project is to document the style, identity and the nostalgic visuals of the Pantsula culture.

Kinnard, R 2021 define Pantsula as the name of a dancing culture originating in the black townships of South Africa during the Apartheid. They mostly wear collared shirts in bright hues, dickies work pants and converse shoes. The crewmembers dance and dress in coordination-wearing identical uniforms that distinguish each crew with a unique take on the recognizable pantsula work wear style.

The concepts discusses the era of AmaPantsula , exploring different townships styles, culture and creative processes to show the representations of young black people through street fashion photography.
